Latest Updates from Our Project:

Torment is here, and the Bestiary is coming
about 9 years ago – Tue, Mar 14, 2017 at 11:44:43 PM

Hello, Ninth World Kickstarter backers—

It’s truly a great time to be a Numenera fan! Numenera: Strand came out a month or two ago, The Poison Eater has been a hit in book stores everywhere, and Cypher Play: Numenera (our organized play program) is going strong at game stores across the country. And now Torment: Tides of Numenera is out—and the Ninth World Bestiary 2 is on the way!

Torment

At long last, Torment: Tides of Numenera is out, and we’re super excited about the game and the reception it’s been getting. Torment has been reviewed scores of times, and the reviews, pretty much without exception, are glowing.

Like what you’re hearing? You can find a roundup of several dozen reviews here. Torment: Tides of Numenera is on Steam for Mac, PC, and Linux, and is also available for Xbox One and PS4.

If you’ve been playing Torment and want to learn a bit more about Greater Garravia and Sagus Cliffs, or if you’re curious about the part of the Ninth World (to the east of the Steadfast and the Beyond) in which the game is set—or if you just want to add some cool new material to your Numenera campaign, don’t forget about Torment: Tides of Numenera—the Explorer’s Guide. It’s a 160-page hardcover sourcebook that expands upon the weird and fascinating places, people, and creatures first glimpsed in Torment. Discover secrets of the computer game, and explore its world in greater depth and detail. Incorporate the region and its inhabitants and conflicts, in whole or in part, into your campaign. Maybe even become a castoff or explore the Tides, mysterious forces that can shape human interactions.

The Bestiary

The next book funded by the Into the Ninth World Kickstarter campaign is the Ninth World Bestiary 2, and it’s coming in May! The book went to press a week or so ago. Remember, you funded a stretch goal that made it even bigger than the original Ninth World Bestiary, so this book is really chock full of weird, cool, and dangerous new Ninth World creatures. Here’s a small peek at a couple of them.

A Strange Box

While this isn’t precisely Numenera-related, if you have fond thoughts about the Exclusive Numenera Boxed Set Edition (or sadness that you missed that awesome Kickstarter), we thought you might like to hear about A Strange Box. We’re in the final week of Kickstarting a boxed set for The Strange with the intent of filling it full of as much amazing coolness as the Numenera boxed set. The Numenera box was perhaps the most awesome RPG boxed set of all time, but we’re hoping to match it with A Strange Box. The Kickstarter ends Friday, so don’t miss it.

(If you haven’t tried The Strange—or if you have just a few of the books—there’s an incredible deal on the entire game line in PDF as part of the LIBRARY OF IMPOSSIBLE THINGS backer level. Check it out!)

Into the Outside! Plus music, film, games, and books!
about 9 years ago – Wed, Feb 01, 2017 at 10:58:37 PM

Hello, Ninth World Kickstarter backers—

This is truly a multi-media update—we have books, music, video games, and film to share with you today. And best of all: Into the Outside is ready to send your way. Details on that below, but first:

Music

Wonderful, ambient background music inspired by dozens of locations around the Ninth World? And they loop, so you can put them on repeat as background music for your Numenera game? Sign us up! Actually, we’re already signed up, and you can be too—just check out the Numenera Audio Collection Kickstarter campaign going on right now by Plate Mail Games.

Wes Otis, the musical genius behind Plate Mail Games, has already unlocked music inspired by locations from Into the OutsideTorment: Tides of Numenera—the Explorer’s GuideInto the Deep, and Into the Night, as well as the corebook and Ninth World Guidebook. And he’s adding new stretch goals almost every day.

If you backed at EBOOK LOVER or above, you’re getting a track for free as one of your Into the Ninth World rewards. Wes composed a track based on Nihliesh (see the Numenera corebook, page 209)—Monte picked the location, one of his favorites in the Ninth World, specifically to have this track made for you. Look for an email with the link to this reward in the coming days.

Fiction

As you probably know, The Poison Eater is now out. If it’s one of your rewards, you should have received your email for the hardcover earlier in January. The book has been getting rave reviews, and early news from the book trade is that the softcover edition, published by Angry Robot Books, is doing well at places like Barnes and Noble.

Video Games

One of the most anticipated video game releases of the year is coming soon: Torment: Tides of Numenera releases at the end of this month!

Film

The short film Numenera: Strand has been made free to view on YouTube and Vimeo. Fans have been raving:

“Beautifully shows the wonder and mystery of the Ninth World.”
“An incredible and visually epic film!”
“An amazing and beautiful introduction to the world of Numenera.”

If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. And please share it with your friends—it’s a great way to show others what Numenera and the Ninth World are all about.

(There’s also the brand-new Exploring Numenera: Strand glimmer, based on the film, available now at the MCG Shop.)

And Finally: Into the Outside!

Into the Outside is ready to ship to backers! If it’s one of your rewards, look for your redemption email in the next day or so. This is one beautiful book, full of wonderful Numenera weirdness, and we can’t wait to get it into your hands. So look out for your redemption email (as well as your music reward email), and place your order as soon as you get it.

And don't forget that the Numenera Audio Collection Kickstarter includes music specifically from Into the Outside. And be sure to watch Numenera: Strand—and to share it. And we hope you've enjoyed The Poison Eater. And, well, everything!

The Thief, the Clave, and the Ultimatum (and other cool stuff)
over 9 years ago – Wed, Dec 07, 2016 at 07:58:53 PM

Hello, Ninth World Kickstarter backers—

We have a new reward for you! The first social media achievement you hit during the Kickstarter campaign unlocked a free adventure, and it’s ready for you now. The Thief, the Clave, and the Ultimatum is an Instant Adventure, meaning it’s specially designed to require very little GM prep time. You could literally be running it 10 minutes from now. It’s also a great intro into further adventuring based on Into the Night, Into the Deep, or Into the Outside.

You should already have received an email to claim your copy. If you didn’t, first check your spam filter, and if it’s not there hit the Contact Us link on the Monte Cook Games website.

Give Some of MCG’s Money to Charity!

The MCG Holiday Gift is a present you can give to the world—or to a loved one—or to yourself. And it’s on us! Here’s how it works: We give you a $5 coupon code. Between now and December 26, you can go to the MCG Shop and use that code to make a $5 donation to one of three great charities. Or take $5 off a gift to a friend, family member, or yourself.

It’s free, no strings attached. Just enter the coupon code 2016MCGHolidayGift when you check out. You can find all the details here.

Need a Gift for a New Numenera Player?

The Numenera Starter Set is an introductory product that lets new players give the Ninth World, and the Cypher System, a try. It includes pregenerated characters, easy-to-learn rules, an adventure, and even dice, a poster map, and XP and GM Intrusion cards. It's a great value and a great way to learn Numenera. As an Into the Ninth World backer, it's not a product made for you, but it's a great gift and a great way to bring new players into the game. And it’s available now! (You can even use the MCG Holiday Gift code to get $5 off!)

But if you’re buying the Numenera Starter Set (or anything else from the MCG Shop) as a gift, don’t dawdle. Place your domestic order no later than December 10—after that, we can’t guarantee it will reach you before Christmas.

The Poison Eater Is on Its Way!

The Poison Eater is now at the printer. If this novel is part of your reward, expect it in January! And if you’re also getting it as an ebook, look forward to it in that format in the next couple of weeks.

If you like audiobooks, here's some other cool news: The Poison Eater will be available on Audible. (This isn’t a Kickstarter reward, but it’s too cool not to share the news.) We don’t have specifics on when, but it shouldn’t be long after the release of the print version. Shanna’s tale has been receiving rave reviews from everyone who’s read it, and we can’t wait to hear it in audiobook format!

Let’s Play a Game

In January Monte is going to run an Into the Ninth World themed adventure for some MCG staff and friends—and we’re going to broadcast it live on Twitch! (I mentioned this in the last update, with plans to do it in December. With the holidays making time tight for you and for us, we decided to push it back a bit.) We'll have more details on the timing soon, but for now, save the date: The evening of Thursday, January 5. This is another achievement goal you unlocked during the campaign. Monte runs a great game, so it's sure to be an exciting and entertaining event.

We hope to see you there, and have a great holiday season!

Novels, Short Fiction, a Game on Twitch, and Other Updates
over 9 years ago – Sat, Nov 05, 2016 at 01:01:22 AM

Hello, Ninth World Kickstarter backers—

It’s been a little over a month since we released Numenera Character Options 2, your most recent big reward for the Into the Ninth World campaign. We’ve been busy since then, as always. This week we released Tales Beyond the Ninth World, an anthology of three short stories written by Monte, Shanna, and Bruce. This was one of the stretch goals you unlocked during the campaign. You should have received your fulfillment email a few days ago. Your reward includes the anthology in PDF and popular ebook formats.

More Great Stuff Coming

Speaking of stretch goals, we have two more items coming up quickly—items you unlocked as achievements. We’ll have a new Instant Adventure for you, written by Bruce. And we’re going to have a live game—the MCG design team playing Numenera live on Twitch! Both of these will happen in early December, so look for more details in a few weeks.

The Poison Eater and Into the Outside

The Poison Eater is on the verge of going to press. We’ve been working closely with our partners at Angry Robot Books, who are publishing the paperback edition for distribution in bookstores around the world. The Kickstarter edition, though, will be a premium hardcover. The book is all finished, edited, and proofed, and it’s an amazing tale. If you’re getting it as a reward, expect the hardcover in January—but we’ll have the ebook version available for you in December.

After that, journey with us Into the Outside! This title is also finished, and is now in the editing process. It will be out in February. Bruce has done an incredible job with this book—you’re going to be blown away.

Know Anyone Who Wants to Give Numenera a Try?

With Torment: Tides of Numenera launching in just a couple of months, and the Numenera organized play program going strong in retail shops all over, interest in Numenera from new players—and even those new to tabletop gaming—is skyrocketing. So we’re releasing the Numenera Starter Set, an introductory product that lets new players give the Ninth World, and the Cypher System, a try. It includes pregenerated characters, easy-to-learn rules, an adventure, and even dice, a poster map, and XP and GM Intrusion cards. It’s a great value, and a great way to learn Numenera. As an Into the Ninth World backer, it’s not a product made for you, but it’s a great gift and a great way to bring new players into the game. Look for it in game stores, and at the MCG Shop, in a few weeks!

Speaking of New Gamers. . .

No Thank You, Evil! is our hit, ENnie-Award-winning RPG for families with kids as young as five, and right now we’re Kickstarting a set of expansion products including Story, Please! (an adventure-building deck) and Uh-Oh, Monsters! (a boxed set featuring new creatures and adventures). The campaign is already funded and hitting its first stretch goals. If you don’t have No Thank You, Evil!, there are backer levels that include the basic game.

The best part? If everything goes to plan, we’ll deliver the first rewards in time for the holidays! The basic game will ship in early December, and assuming no hiccups with customs or other unforeseen problems, Story, Please! will ship that time as well. So if you’ll be doing any Christmas shopping for gamer kids—or kids who could become gamers—this is a great campaign to back! You can catch an early review of Story, Please! here.
